Benjamin in on page 27, William on page 19 in household of Nancy Hanna, lucinda on page 19 in household of Edison Howe, Rosa on page 28 in household of Nevins Burrell and Mary on page 18 in household of Frank J. McQuistan.
By 1870, Benjamin had remarried. Rosa was living with Benjamin and wife, but Mary was living with her brother William and wife. Mary and William Stafford were married in Mankato on 20 Nov 1872."
From "History of the Minnesota Valley" page 556, by Rev. Edward D. Neill, North Star Publishing Company, 1882: "Benjamin was born November 13, 1812, in Madison County, New York. He learned glass blowing, and after working a number of years in his native state removed to New Jersey, most of the time being foreman of the glass works where he was employed. Obituary in Memphis Press-Scimitar, November 4, 1938:
"Mrs. Mary Stafford
Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Durkee Stafford, wife of the late William Stafford, for many years secretary and treasurer of the National Field Trial Association and the American Field Trials Association, died at 6 last night at the home of her daughter, Mrs. D. M. Haste, 756 N. Auburndale. She was 87.
Mrs. Stafford had been ill with arthritis for more than 15 years. Born in New Jersey, she moved to Trenton, Tenn. with her husband more than 50 years ago. They moved to Memphis 25 years ago and Mr. Stafford died five years later.
Mrs. Stafford leaves another daughter, Mrs. W.T. Byars, New York City.
Services will be conducted by Rev. Charles Stuart Hale at 1:30 p.m. today at National Funeral Home. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery."
The Obituary in the Commercial Appeal on the same date states essentially the same information, but adds that Mrs. Stafford was the "grandmother of Mrs. Walter Babin of this city".
Notes for WILLIAM BYRON STAFFORD:
William Byron Stafford was one of the founders of the National Field Trials at Ames Plantation, Grand Junction TN... the famous bird dog championship trials. He and a group of men started the association in 1896. An article in the Commercial Appeal, Feb. 17, 1980, lists William B. Stafford as one of the 'departed patrons'. Another article, Feb. 22, 1976, describes the Field Trials, and the history of the Ames Plantation.
There is another more descriptive article, which was sent to me by the secretary at Ames Plantation, taken from the book "National Field Trial Champions" by William F. Brown and Nash Buckingham, copyrighted in 1955. William B. Stafford is mentioned prominently in this piece, which follows:.
"William B. Stafford
William B. Stafford, who served as secretary from the time of the organization of the Champion Association until his death in Memphis, Tenn., on Sunday, December 16, 1917, is considered among the field trial immortals.
Bill Stafford, from boyhood on, was enthusiastic about bird dogs and no one's devotion to field trials exceeded his through all the years he was connected with the game.
When the organizational meeting was held at Barber Junction, N.C., inNovember 1895, W. B. Stafford was named secretary pro tem. When officers were regularly elected, he was chosen for the same position and he occupied the post until his death, upon which C. E. Buckle became acting secretary.
Besides his official duties with the National Field Trial Champion Association, Mr. Stafford served as secretary of the old United States Field Trial Association for many terms, while that club was also holding forth at Grand Junction.
His interest in trials dated from 1881... and he never lost his zest for the exciting sport. An expert wing shot, knowledgeable about the habits of game, and an ardent and skilled angler, the Tennessee sportsman enjoyed a full life, rich in outdoor adventures and achievements."
His Death Certificate filed in Shelby County TN 12-17-1917 states cause of death to be "pernicious anemia and myelogenous leukemia, with acute appendicitis as contributory".... Shows his parents as Joseph Stafford and Sylvester Burges (sic) but has both born in Tenn. which is incorrect. Information given by Mrs. Wl B. Stafford, 1313 Monroe, Memphis TN. Burial in Elmwood Cemetery by J. W. Norris & Co. He was 68.
Information from a fellow researcher in 1980 states: "9/16/1850 Wisconsin Census, Dodge County, Town of LeRoy, Family 1294-1319, page 135 -- Joseph C. Stafford age 39, New Hampshire, Farmer, R. Estate 1500; Sylvia, 37, Vermont; William, 1, Wisconsin, Henry Burgess 19 Vermont Farmer."
The 1870 censuses showed Rosa Durkee, 20, New Jersey, teaching school, living in the household of Andrew Hardin. William B. Stafford, 21, Wisconsin, Painter, in the household of Lyman Burgess, 56, Vermont, works in lumber and Sarah, 54, Vermont. Also: Bary (sic) Durkee, 57, New York, at home; Betsey, 52, Maine, Rosa Durkee, 20, New Jersey, Teaching School"
A copy of the Marriage license and certificate for William and Mary Elizabeth states that they were married in Mankato, Minn., on Nov. 20, 1872 by Jas. B. Little, Minister of the Gospel; and the witnesses were L. L. Davis, W. C. Durkee, H. C. Libbells. The original certificate was signed by William C. Durkee, Clerk.
Children of MARY DURKEE and WILLIAM STAFFORD are:
i. VIDA BURGESS10 STAFFORD, b. November 09, 1873; d. November 11, 1944; m. WILLIAM TURNER BYARS, November 03, 1903, Paris, Tennessee; b. January 29, 1871; d. July 16, 1956.
Notes for VIDA BURGESS STAFFORD:
Vida was Jessie Stafford's older sister, Virginia Haste Babin's aunt. When I first started researching the family genealogy, I called Elmwood Cemetery for information. The gentleman there told me that buried on Lot lll5, Chapel Hill Section, are the ashes of Vida S. Byars and William T. Byars, (her husband).
Vida's ashes were buried January 19, 1945; Wiliam's ashed were buried on February 22, 1957.
Vida's ashes were sent to Elmwood for burial by Mrs. Charles Ince, #6 Alden Place, Rocksville NY. (Long Island NY) By 1957, when William's ashes were sent to Elmwood, Mrs. Charles R. Ince was living at 435 E. 79th St., NYC, NY.
I contacted LINC at the Memphis Library, and from the NY telephone directory, got an address for a "C.Ince, 240 E. 76th St., NYC". On the outside chance that this unusual name might be a relative, I wrote to C. Ince. She replied that Vida was her aunt, and put me in touch with Keren Ince Petty, Vida Stafford Byars' grand daughter! Keren then gave me all names and dates (but no places) of Vida's children, and descendants, as of 1979.
Both Vida and William died several months prior to the burial of their ashes at Elmwood. See Family Pages for dates.
Keren Petty sent me a lineage for William Turner Byars that her mother, Vida Moselle, used when planning to join the DAR. This lineage has no direct bearing on the Stafford/Haste/Babin family, but is being entered into the Family Tree Maker files, and can also be found in my Stafford Notebook files (on paper).
Keren was named for the Revolutionary War heroine, "Kerenhappuch Norman Turner, whose sons and grandsons were with General Greene in the Battle of Guilford Court House, North Carolina. She rode horseback from Maryland to nurse her son James, and remained to nurse others, doing such efficient work that a monument has been erected to her memory on the battlefield at Guilford Court House."
ii. JESSIE MAY STAFFORD, b. August 27, 1876, Mankato, Minnesota; d. February 22, 1959, Memphis Tennessee; m. DAVID MILES HASTE, January 30, 1899, Trenton Tennessee; b. December 23, 1872, Laneview, Gibson Co.,Tennessee; d. January 12, 1944, Memphis Tennessee.
Notes for JESSIE MAY STAFFORD:
