Monticello, Ark., February 6, 1917

T. J. LOCKHART, ET AL., vs A. D. BREEDLOVE, ET AL

The above case in the Chancery Court of this county terminated in a decree for the plaintiffs. The Court found that Adam Lockhart died Mch. 4, 1890, seized and possessed of the N 1-2 of Sec. 3, N 1-2 of SW 1-4 of Sec. 3, E 1-2 of NE 1-3 Sec 4, Twp. 11 S., Rge. 5. W., Drew County, and BK 1-3 of SE 1-14 of Sec. 33, Twp. 10 S., Rge. 5.W., Lincoln County, ARk.; that the said Adam Lockhart died intestate, without issue, and without living ancestors, but left a widow, who afterwards married E. C. Grisham; that said widow died in 1915; that the plaintiffs were the sole and only heirs at law of the said Adam Lockhart, deceased, and were the owners in fee of the hereinbefore desribed lands; that said lands were so situated that a partition in kind would not be made without prejudice to the owners. The Court ordered the lands sold and the proceeds, after payment of expenses, costs, and fees, divided in accordance with the table of heirship herein-after set forth.

On January 5, 1917, a sale was had at the courthouse door in the city of Monticello. A large number of people attended the sale and there were six active bidders. First, the land was offered in separate tracts. In this way it brought $1965. Next, it ws offered as a whole and in this way it brought $3005.00, for which amount it was struck off and sold to the Dermott Land & Lumber Company. The deed was approved today. Notes for MARGARET MORPHIS JACK:

Copied from a letter from Uncle Fletcher Davis.....1941

"Mother died, 11 o'clock Wednesday night. Brownie" The above message in the form of a telegram from a cousin of the editor of this paper (The Hondo Anvil Herald), Mrs. Brownie Stotz, Memphis, Tennessee, datd 7:45 a.m. 1941, brought the news of the passing of the last from among the living of the generation of brothers and sisters to which his parents belonged.

Mrs. Margaret Lockhart was the widow of T. J. Lockhart, a younger brother of our Mother. While this meant no blood kinship, that relationaship could scarcely have added to the deep affection we have had from our childhood for our Aunt Mag. ....

The tenth child of a mother who herself orphaned at nine years of age, we never knew our grandparents. We never knew but one member of the generation to which belonged our grandparents, Charles and Emeline Bailey Lockhart, and Francis Marion and Margaret Douglas Davis....

Furthermore, while Aunt Mag reared to womanhood seven daughters and is mourned by six of these, she lost two boys -- one in infancy and one in young man-hood, so that none are left to bear the Lockhart name, save for a granddaughter of Charles Lockhart (Gordon "Tot" Lockhart), his and his brother's name has faded from the living.

Notes for ANNA DOUGLASS LOCKHART:

From notes I made about "Mama" when first starting to research family history:

"At age 12, she went to Hillsboro, Ark., to Miss White's Academy for Young Ladies. Only wealthy landowners could educate girls (or boys) after age 12. There were wild animals all over Arkansas: deer and bobcats. No electricity, phones, gasoline or cars. Mama took a steamboat ride down the Ouachita River. Travel on farm by wagon and horse. Cotton went to market by wagon to Memphis, took all day from farm to Memphis, to wagon yards, to rent place for night. Cotton men came and bid on cotton. Plantation owner came by buggy or train. Owner met cotton buyer, bid on cotton, made sale, then empty wagon goes back.

In Arkansas, fire from chimney and smoke attracted wild animals. Panther came, walking on roof. Servant threw straw mattress into fireplace. Blazed up into chimney, frightened panther away."

Anna Gordon Davis was born in 1912, after Mama and my grandfather had been married 12 years. They lived in Memphis at the time Mother was born, but she grew up on the family farm on Taska Road in Marshall County, Mississippi. Eugenia and Carol were born 3 and 8 years later. My grandfather Charles Dudley Davis, their father, died in 1923, when Carol was only 3 years old. Mama took the three little girls and moved over to Slayden, where she taught school and boarded at the school's teachers housing.

Later Mama took the girls to Memphis and lived with Aunt Betty and then Aunt Emily (her sisters-in law) until she got a job teaching in the Memphis City School System. Mayor E. H. Crump had been an Insurance Business associate of my grandfather's in Holly Springs MS, so Mama went to him for help. He was the one who got the teaching position for her. (When I married in 1950, Mr. and Mrs. Crump sent me a beautiful, heavy, sterling silver tray as a wedding gift, since Mr. Crump and Grandfather Dean also had been political friends throughout the years.)

Mama taught Art at Treadwell High School for many years, and then taught the 4th grade. She was invited to continue teaching after she reached age 65, which was an honor bestowed on just a few teachers at that time.

She bought the house at 2265 Central Ave. in the early 30s, when she first started teaching. She carpooled with Miss King, whose twin nieces attended Southwestern at the same time I did.

She seemed to remember Uncle Charlie (Mama's father) and said he had a store in Eldorado that she remembered going to. He married AMELIA LEE NORA (LENONA) JOWERS (Source: Karen "Lonnie" Weir, Everett, Washington, 98201 10-24-99 by telephone, and 26 Family Group Sheets of his descendants - by Karen L. Weir (10-31-99).) January 07, 1880 in Mr. Pleasant, Mississippi, daughter of THOMAS JOWERS and EMALINE NUNERY. She was born April 15, 1862, and died February 07, 1896 in Muldrow, Oklahoma.

Notes for CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS DAVIS:

Columbus Davis was married in Mt, Pleasant MS, and is buried in Black Jack Cemetery in Muldrow, Oklahoma according to a letter from Uncle Fletcher to Mother in the 1960s.

From Karen Weir 10-31-99 (Columbus Davis was her great-grandfather) ; Obituary: " Died of Heart Failure C.Davis, an old resident of this city, died very suddenly Tuesday evening of heart failure. Mr. Davis had had several attacks of heart trouble lately and while his death was sudden, it came not unexpected by his relatives and friends. The funeral was preached by Rev. E. V. Dowell Wednesday afternoon and the remains were buried in the Black Jack Cemetery."

And a clipping from Uncle Fletcher's Hondo Anvil Herald: Copy of the obituary plus: "The foregoing, from the Muldrow Oklahoma Press, a newspaper published at his home town, March 30, 1912, is an account of the death of the eldest brother of the editor of this paper. He had just passed his fifty-fifth year, and it is hard to realize that the relentless hand of death has claimed one who should just now be in his prime. Three short summers ago, he and the writer met after a separation of twenty years and spent a few days among the scenes of our boyhood in old Mississippi; and though boys of a different generation, we were both boys again for the one brief day we spent at the old home nest recalling the days of that former bright period in our lives. And now he is dead! Oh! the unspeakable sorrow of that word! No more may we meet on life's playground as of yore! And the silent tomb to whose embrace he has gone gives back no voice to soothe the bleeding hearts left behind. But in the impotence of finite wisdom and strength, man rests in that faith that is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things unseen and pours over his stricken soul that balm of Hope which alone can minister surcease. It is well with the departed."

31. FRANCIS MARION8 DAVIS III (MARY ADELIA7 LOCKHART, CHARLES6, JOHN5, LEMUEL4, JAMES3, NATHAN2, NOAH1) was born October 19, 1859 in Marshall Co, Mississippi, and died July 06, 1945 in Memphis Tennessee. He married (1) LEE BOWDEN Abt. 1905. He married (2) GOLDIE SIMMONS 1910 in Memphis Tennessee. She was born 1874 in Jackson, Mississippi, and died 1950 in Memphis Tennessee.

Notes for FRANCIS MARION DAVIS III:

Obituary from The Collierville Herald:

"Uncle of Local Resident Dies -- Frances (sic) Marion Davis, uncle of Mrs. John Little Dean of Collierville, died at his home on Perkins Road near Memphis at 10 o'clock Friday night following a stroke. He was 84.

The fourth child and second son of the late F. M, and Mary Lockhart Davis, Mr. Davis was born near Booneville, Miss., and moved to Memphis in 1910. His boyhood was spent on the farm near Mt. Pleasant, Miss. He was a landowner and operator of a grocery store both in Mississippi and Tennessee.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Goldie Davis, a daughter, Mrs. Ross M. Doty of Memphis, three grandchildren and a brother, Fletcher Davis of Hondo, Texas."

Karen Weir (10-31-99) sent this copy of Uncle Fletcher's article in the Hondo Anvil Herald:

"We Lose Our Last Brother

When death came to Francis Marion Davis at 10 o'clock Friday night, July 6, 1945, at his home near Memphis, Tenn., it robbed the managing editor of this paper of the last of his twelve brothers and sisters and left him the last, lone survivor of his family of thirteen brothers and sisters.

Born October 19, 1859, the deceased had reached the advanced age of 85 years, 8 months and 17 days and had thus attained the longest life of any of his family or as far as known, any of his ancestry. He was married twice, his first wife, nee Lee Bowden and their two infant sons dying many years ago. His second wife, nee Goldie Simmons, and their daughter, now Mrs. Ross H. Doty, and three little grandchildren survive him.

In the summer of 1937, he and his wife, their daughter and husband Ross H. Doty, and their little daughter, Mary Frances, visited the editor and family here -- the only visit the editor ever had from one of him immediate family in the nearly fifty years of his residence in Texas.

One by one this writer has seen the last of his ties of brotherhood shattered and broken by death's inexorable hand, and it would not be human not to be grieved. But there is comfort in the reflection that he had attained a full life, had finished his race and through all his years had kept his faith that right finally prevails. Unassuming, unpretentious, but strict in his integrity, we do not believe there was ever a finer moral character. To what greater achievement could man aspire? How better to attain the plaudit.."Well done!"

To those who will miss him most, the wife, the daughter and the three little grandchildren, to each and all of whom he was passionately devoted, our heart goes out in deepest sympathy."

Mama's Obituary from THE SOUTH REPORTER, Holly Springs MS, Thursday June 2, 1977:
