Ancestors of Doris Annette King
Generation No. 1
1. Doris Annette King, born January 17, 1920 in Marlin, Texas; died June 27, 1999 in Albany, New York. She was the daughter of 2. David Pennington King and 3. Georgia Ann Bennett. She married (1) Sydney Philip Smith. He was born 1918, and died 1954. She married (2) Clyde Sylvanus West November 08, 1974.
Notes for Doris Annette King:
Doris and I got acquainted through genealogy research in 1982, when she wrote in response to an ad that she found in a genealogy magazine, which I had placed when hunting for Bennett ancestors.
A long friendship developed and continued through the years until her death in 1999. We discovered our mutual Bennett and Hammond ancestors, learning that we were 3rd and 4th cousins -- on the two lines. She lived in San Antonio with her husband, Clyde Sylvanus West. Her first husband, the father of her two sons, was killed in an airplane crash when the boys were very young.
Doris raised the boys alone, continuing her education to complete her doctorate in English, and teaching at college level while they were growing up. Marrying Clyde, who was related in some way to her first husband, she had a 'good life' in San Antonio, not far from her origin in Marlin, Texas.
In 1987, Clyde, Doris, Steve and Sue and their baby daughter Marion, visited in Memphis and we had the opportunity to meet them for dinner. Clyde and Doris had previously come through Memphis and we met them then.
During the '80s, we helped each other with genealogy research, proving ancestors for membership in the Jamestowne Society, Dames of the Court of Honor, Daughters of the American Colonists, Magna Charta Dames, and several others. Her research was meticulous, well documented, and very precise. We mailed documents back and forth as we found more and more on our mutual ancestors.
She was a 'great encourager' as well, and always seemed to enjoy the poems and short stories that I wrote, and sent copies to her.
They moved to a retirement home in San Antonio, where they lived until Clyde's death. Doris continued to live in the large apartment complex until she moved to Menands, New York on the outskirts of Albany, in order to be closer to Steve and Sue, and also to Sydney and Helen who live in Evanston, Illinois.
In about 1996 I persuaded Doris to buy and learn to use a computer, and to put all her genealogy on Family Tree Maker as I have done. She got an Internet Service Provider, RoadRunner, and our email correspondence began. We exchanged email messages almost daily for over two years, even sending genealogy research back and forth on our mutual ancestors. Through the Internet, she recently found a King cousin, and was able to help the cousin fill in many blanks in her research.
In January, Doris developed some knots under her arm, as a result of the chemotherapy from her mastectomy 22 years before. She had several sessions of surgery as the knots continued to appear. In early June, 1999, she emailed me that she was SICK.... short of breath, nauseated, unable to eat, but "Keep the funnies coming......" (jokes we exchanged on email). Steve and Sue took excellent care of her, and emailed me when Doris had to be hospitalized in mid-June.
A cancer had attacked Doris's liver, and within 10 days, she was dead. Steve, a 25-year physician, said he'd never seen anything so fast, nor had her oncologist. Steve telephoned me on June 27, 1999 to tell me his mother had passed away peacefully, with all the family present.
