GFWC of TN Endowment Fund – Dorothy Skinner

The year 2002 marks the 50th anniversary of the Tennessee Endowment Fund. It was started by forward thinking State President Leah Knox with $319.68 that became available because the Hancock County Health Center closed. At the present time there is over $120,000 invested and the income is used to support the State Federation. This income in turn amounts to about $2 per member per year which results in State dues being kept at a minimum.

We encourage each club to be 100% (one dollar per year per member) and we also encourage entries in the Golden Memory Book as memorials, thank offerings, honorariums and other such events that your clubs or individuals might want to be remembered. The book is really a history of our Federation and is always available at Conventions and Board meetings. I also expect each State Board of Directors members to at least donate a minimum "one-liner" as an expression of her gratefulness for being selected to be on this Important assignment. (I make a great effort to collect this at the annual Fall Board Meeting.) Other details of how to submit entries to the book are outlined in detail in your Handbook Directory.

Membership – Sandy Lindeman and Carla Goff

Hi Ladies, Hope your summer was a nice one, it goes by to fast.
Now that we are getting geared up for our club year there are a couple of things to keep in mind.

1) Have a new member function, a tea or something like that. Where you invite perspective new members, have a social and tell them what the GFWC is about, the activities of your club and make them feel like they want to join your club.
2) Remember to salute a member with an nomination to "GFWC of TN Outstanding Club Woman" report form is found on page 127 in TFWC Handbook. I will have the Rules and criteria of the program at the Fall District meetings.
3) Remember "Membership is....The Gift of Friendship"
Sandy & Carla.

Southeastern Region will meet at The Homestead in Hot Springs, Virginia, November 8-11, 2001. Sue Walker is a candidate for SER secretary.

Update on the Truck Bill – Highway Safety

I just found out today (August 15) that the "trucks use 2 right lanes" signs are being installed in Knoxville for the Pilot Program. All signs will be in place by the end of this week. Mark Best, Regional Transportation Assistant Project (TTAP) Engineer said that the signs are side mounted (not above the road, which would be too expensive). A study was done prior to signs being placed to determine the needs/sights.

After the pilot program is completed for the year, another study will take place to determine;

1. Did the signs made a difference
2. Were there fewer accidents
3. Was safety improved

I am excited to see that this project/program is moving forward. If GFWC of TN didn't get busy with this project, I don't think that we would have seen this beginning for safety on Interstate highways.
