Scholarships

The reported amount of scholarships awarded by GFWC last year was an outstanding $1,458,202.33! Now there is a chance to double that amount by partnering with the Corporation for National Service in conjunction with the President's Student Service Scholarship Program.

Through this scholarship initiative, each high school in the country may select two students among their junior or senior classes to receive $1,000 in recognition of outstanding service to their communities. The corporation for National Service provides $500 from a partnering organization in the community. Since it's inception, the program has awarded over 13,000 scholarships to students who have made significant contributions to their communities through service activities. Students who have contributed at least 100 hours of service within the past twelve months are eligible. Information packets containing the program guidelines and certification forms will be mailed to every school in January/February 2002.

Clubs should contact their local high schools and alert them to the program. In addition, schools need to know that local GFWC clubs are willing to serve as matching supporting organizations.. Clubs may do this on their own to work with other organizations to provide the matching $500. More information can be obtained by visiting the President's Student Service Challenge web site at www.student-service-awards.org or by calling 1-800-291-7700.

Sue Walker Tribute Dinner

The GFWC Knoxville Woman’s Club hosted a Tribute dinner for Sue S. Walker on July 27 at Calhouns on the River in Knoxville. The tribute raised over $1000 which will go to help fund a health care clinic for the Pleasant Ridge Elementary School.

A long list of dignitaries honored Sue with speeches, certificates, proclamations, and gifts. Sue has been a member of GFWC of Tennessee for over 20 years. She is a past president of the GFWC Knoxville Woman’s Club, District II and GFWC of TN. She is currently serving as GFWC of TN Mountain Division chairman and SER treasurer.
