GFWC International Convention June 2002 - Kansas City

President Susan Martin led a delegation of thirteen delegates to the GFWC International Convention held in Kansas City, Missouri, June 15-18, 2002. Over 1000 delegates converged upon Kansas City for the 111th annual convention. Representing Tennessee were President Susan Martin, Director of Junior Clubs,- Della Gowan, President-elect Lana Robinson, Director-elect of Junior Clubs Carla Goff, GFWC Credentials Chairman Margaret England, GFWC Crime Prevention Chairman Carol Reeser, along with Isabel Edmands, Mary Love Coley, Ann Durall, Kay Barlow, Laurel Karp and Jane Tolley. Pre-convention events included a day of service to a local hospital, city tours including the Truman Library, and a visit to AmeriStar. Speakers included Bettina Gregory, ABC veteran correspondent; Rachel Musleah--the GFWC Print Journalism award winner, and John Gray, author of "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus". Entertainment included Rosetta Robinson and the Steve Miller K. C. Quartet, and hypnotist Tom Burgoon. The agenda included business sessions interspersed with workshops to enhance personal skills, to explain new programs, introduction and speeches by the ladies running for GFWC positions, their election and the consideration of the proposed resolutions.
AWARDS at Convention Susan and Della were on hand to accept the following GFWC awards presented to GFWC of TENNESSEE: Second place in portrait photography and $100 to Ann Durall of GFWC Ossoli Circle. Youth poetry category II - $100 to Kerry Miller sponsored by the GFWC Andrew Johnson Woman's Club, for the poem " Why I don't Eat Veggies" (see TFNews Vol 1 # 10 for this poem) Libraries 2000- First place plaque to GFWC Stones River Woman's club Operation Smile Certificates to GFWC Suburbia WC, Tennessee is a category II club and one certificate is awarded in each membership category. The following certificates were received: Education Special Projects - chaired by Tana Sowell Literacy - chaired by Laurel Karp ESO chaired by Jamie Sipes Legislation/Public Policy chaired by Kendra Patty Women's History and Resource Center chaired by Jane Wilson. The Convention concluded with the installation of the 2002-2004 officers. Lana Robinson was formally recognized as the President of GFWC of Tennessee, and Carla Goff as Director of Junior Clubs in Tennessee. Serving on the board will be Susan Martin, chairman of Women and Finance, and Della Gowan as SE Leadership. Both Susan and Della held workshops at the Convention.
