Meet Betty Johnson, President of District 1

Betty writes: "Born in Atlanta GA, raised in Houston TX, I grew up with three sisters, married A. E. "Bill" Johnson and have three sons. When younger, I enjoyed making my own clothes; and clothes for our sons, until they reached the age of knowing that other children were wearing 'store bought' clothes and wondered why they could not do the same. I learned at a very early age that I enjoy writing, especially children's stories. In May of 1990, I received a Certificate of Merit Award from the Tennessee Historical Commission for having made significant contributions to the preservation of the historical and architectural heritage of Tennessee. I now have one children's book in the process of being published, which should be in the bookstores some time in the fall of 2002. Also, I am now in the process of preparing my second children's book, which should be in bookstores some time around the first of the year 2003.

I have worked/taught in Sunday School from Bed Babies through College Students. As a substitute, I taught High School Math and Social Studies. After our sons were in college and/or married, I decided, as hobby, to make and sell gourmet candies and cakes, etc. When that became a seven-day a week, twenty-four hour a day JOB, I gave it up and bought myself a set of golf clubs and took lessons.

Along with our three sons, my husband and I have three daughters-in-law and seven grandchildren, with whom I look forward to spending most of my summers. I have served as President and in several Offices of The Monday Club of Johnson City. I have served as Treasurer and President Elect/Membership Chairman of GFWC of TN District 1, and as chairman of GFWC of TN's President's Special Project.

I look forward to serving as President of GFWC of TN District 1 for the next two years. In keeping with the dedication of GFWC toward the Improvement of Communities, the Slogan of District 1 for this term will be 'Volunteers in Community Leadership, needed now more than ever.'"

What is the Endowment Fund?

During the 1950-52 administration of Mrs. Hugh Knox it was felt that there were just not enough funds available to buy needed supplies and operate our organization. So - she established the Endowment Fund with $319.68 that became available as a result of the closing of the Hancock County Health Clinic Fund.

The purpose of the fund is to ensure the future of Federation work in Tennessee. Monies from this fund that are received from our membership are invested by the Finance Committee. Our aim is 100% participation of our club members. ($1 per member per year.) Our goal for 2002 was to have $100,000 in this fund and we attained that goal in 2001! The interest from these securities are added each year to our State General Fund. This added income each year has enabled the State of Tennessee to keep your annual State dues at a rate of $2 per member. Our Silver and Golden Endowment Books are a way for our individual members to participate as a way to honor or thank our members by making a contribution in their name. More details on this Fund are in our Handbook, and we welcome additions to our Endowment Books. These books are available for you to see at each of the Fall Board Meetings and our Annual Convention.

IMPORTANT GFWC of TN FALL CONFERENCE NEWS from Sandy Lindeman

As you know our GFWC of Tennessee Fall Conference is September 27th through the 29th in Manchester, as Fall Conference Chairman there are a few things you need to know.

1. Friday we are planning an outing to Jack Daniel’s in Lynchburg and we will eat at Miss Bobo’s, the 30 reservations are full but there are other restaurants on the square to eat at. We will all take a bus and leave the hotel at 9:30 a.m. and return around 3:00. Lynchburg is a very unique town with little shops. If you made reservations to eat at Bobo’s and are unable to go please email me at lindeman@cafes.net and let me know because we have a waiting list, and we have to pay for 30.

2. The table decorations for the meal functions will be donated to charitable organizations in Coffee County. Our State President Lana Robinson has asked Every club to be responsible for one basket filled with items or table decoration that can be given to the organizations.

3. As you know the GFWC of Tennessee will be hosting the SER meeting in Nashville in November. One of the things we are responsible for is goody bags to be given to every attendee, which will be about 250. Susan Martin Chairman of the meeting has asked every club to get items to go in the goody bags, such as pens, pencils, nail files, gum, candy etc. We will need to have the items at Fall Conference in September, so we can stuff the bags.

4. IF you wish to make the trip to Lynchburg on Friday, please complete the form below. To be placed on the waiting list for Miss Bobo's, indicate that on the form. If you wish to tour Jack Daniels Distillery and/or be on your own for shopping and lunch, indicate below. (Please COPY the form and mail to Jo Webb) Thanks for your help. See Ya in Manchester, September 27th. Sandy Lindeman

Please make a reservation for me for the Jack Daniels outing……
