Chaplain's Corner - Mattie Mullins A Bargain The dictionary gives us a good definition for the word bargain. A thing bought, sold or given away. Now, that is pretty simple, isnt it? Think of some good bargains you have gotten in the past. Do you notice the Buy One, Get One Free signs in the ads in the newspaper? How about the 50% Off signs. Does that make you want to seek out the bargains? We trade at a near-by fruit stands that always sells bananas 3 # for $1.00. I usually make frequent stops there and never buy them at the super market. That is a bargain. I recently attended a large tent sale at a ladies ready to wear shop in Greensboro, NC. The sign at the entrance said Everything $5.00. Cautiously I entered. Low and behold I found lovely evening dinner dresses marked down to five dollars. Now, that is a bargain. There was not a lot of selection for obviously this was an end of summer clearance sale. It just happened there were two of these name brand dresses in my size. Did I buy both of them? You bet. What a bargain. Yes, you will see me wear them to GFWC meetings this year. What are some bargains we may be overlooking? The challenges and opportunities that God places right before us each day. The minutes and hours every day that we can take advantage of in doing kind deeds for others. Using the talents God has bestowed on each of us to help others. The chances to spread a little love to a person less fortunate. We all love a bargain.
GFWC of Tennessee District I sponsored the First Annual Regional Environmental Conference as a Community Improvement Project March 7 and 8, 2002 at the Adelphia Centre in Johnson City, Tennessee. Four clubs from the district participated: GFWC Johnson City Junior Monday Club, GFWC Monday Club of Johnson City, GFWC Morristown Reading Circle, and GFWC Johnson City Women's Auxiliary. 120 students from area schools attended and learned about ECO-art, using recyclables for art projects, heard The Lorax by Dr. Seuss, received pine seedlings, and participated in a water pollution workshop. Some interesting exhibits were available; the "Trash Car" was provided by the State of Tennessee and the new electric truck was provided by TVA. Regional business, industry and community leaders attended the conference workshops and visited exhibitors to learn how to reduce waste, clean up pollution and keep our environment safe. The Second Regional Environmental Conference is planned for March 5 & 6, 2003 at the General Morgan Inn in Greeneville, Tennessee.
