JO'S JOTTINGS Jo Webb - GFWC of TN Treasurer

Greetings to all! It was a pleasure to see many of you at Fall Conference. Those of us who attended should be eager to get back to our Clubs to share the enthusiasm and begin working toward a most successful Club year in Tennessee.

I prepared " Notes for Club Treasurers" and they were put into the packets for District Presidents. A copy of these guidelines were to be given to each Club President, and ultimately should go to the Club Treasurers. I printed these on yellow paper so that they would not go astray in a sea of white. If a Club Treasurer fails to get her copy, I have a few extras on hand and would be glad to mail a copy to anyone who will send me a self-addressed, stamped envelope.

The new State Handbooks are excellent. All the information is up to date, and it is highly advisable to use this current copy for all current information. Page 116 in the Handbook is the page which should be used in remitting Federation dues. Please make as many copies as you need (for two years) in order to be able to send a copy to me whenever remitting dues, and also to keep a copy for yourself. Additional information can be found on page 117. Please note that my email address is MJWWebb@aol.com My fax number is 865-281-2024. The information in the directory in the back of the book is correct.

If you have bills associated with Fall Conference, please forward a request to me with any pertinent receipts or invoices. I must also have a written request for any budgeted funds.

NOW ladies, let's get rolling! Be sure to get your dues in promptly. Best wishes to everyone for a great start, and much success through the year.

NOTICE TO ALL TENNESSEE VOTERS

BE sure to Vote in the upcoming Elections. Never before has one election been so important to the future of our country as this November 5th one.

The AARP Bulletin says that when older Americans go to the polls, their votes could not only decide the elections’ outcomes but the future of Social Security and Medicare – including prescription drug coverage.

They go on to state that this could be the most significant election in decades for programs that affect people age 65 and over.

Vote on November 5th. If you have a friend or neighbor who is undecided about voting, invite them to go with you. Set a “volunteer” example. Whatever it takes….. VOTE !

GFWC Janusette Delphian, District 8

The W.G.Rhea Public Library recently celebrated the library centennial (1902-2002) with a dinner at the Hampton Inn Convention Center. It recognized the Friends Of The Library association that helps defray expenses, donating books, and giving time and cash. It was organized in 1969 by four local groups.

The Janusette Delphian Club, under the leadership of its president, Lois (Mrs. Hugh) McLean, was one of the sponsoring groups. (It is noted that Mrs. McLean was recently among those receiving recognition as a member of the club for 50 years)

Club members attending the dinner were Dolores Harvie, Mary Sue Leach, Mary Ashley Morris and Joy Kriesky, who presently serves on the Friends of the Library Board.

Mary Sue Leach, GFWC Learning Disabilities Chairman, spoke to the Alpha Delta Kappa educators' sorority on Tuesday, September 24, 2002, at the Rhea Public Library. It includes teachers from Henry and Benton County. A principal and two Title 1 teachers were among those attending.

Mrs. Leach presented a history of dyslexia going back to the origin of the diagnosis in Germany in 1887. The United States Department of Education did away with phonics in 1925. It has been proven in all data converging at the present day that phoneme awareness is vital in teaching these children to read. She stressed that our culture has contributed to many of the problems
and that children must be taught social values of right and wrong. All research confirms a structured multisensory program is mandatory. Following a question and answer period, she distributed information about the Center for Dyslexia Studies, MTSU, Murfreesboro, Tennessee, along with information relating to an associated problem in school children, Attention Deficit Disorder. (Mrs Leach is a founding board member of the Tennessee Branch of the International Dyslexia Association and is regional vice president for Northwest Tennessee.)
