Unicorn Fund/Tornado Disaster
Relief
submitted by Vicki McPeters On November 10, 2002 many lives were changed forever, and several lives were lost. The tornados that hit Mossy Grove & Manchester areas touched the lives of many GFWC members in our state. FEMA, The Salvation Army, The Unicorn Fund, Corporations, churches and individuals have stepped forward with aide to these areas. The Unicorn Fund, Inc. , which is located in Morgan County, is a project that GFWC of Tennessee supports, They have provided clothing, food and money to the victims in need. This is an added burden to the already impoverished area of our state. Our support is greatly needed during this time of crisis. Some clubs have already stepped forward with donations of money, clothing and food. Christmas shoeboxes have been delivered to the families looking forward to a homeless holiday. Habitat for Humanity is planning to rebuild the homes of the families that had no insurance. Three homes were recently approved. We will be in touch with the Director for Habitat in this are to see if volunteers are needed to work on the construction of these homes. GFWC of Tennessee will be planning a pounding for these new homes. Kitchen appliances, washers, dryers and kitchen utensils will be needed. We are asking all clubs in the state to participate in this project. More information will be provided to each club in the state within the next several weeks. We still want to ask each club to consider donations for scholarships also. The Unicorn Fund has increased their scholarships to $700. GFWC Landmark Woman's Club entertains Russian Doctors GFWC Landmark Woman's Club will play host to the three visiting doctors from Russia who are studying at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis. Under the sponsorship of Methodist Hospital, doctors spend a period of three months at the time, on a rotating basis, learning Children's Oncology techniques at St. Jude's Hospital. They take home their new expertise to share in their homeland. While the doctors spend time in Memphis, members of GFWC Landmark Woman's Club invite the visitors to various events, including Graceland, IMAX at the Pink Palace, a Halloween party (which they do not celebrate in their country) and a picnic on a boat at Pickwick, among other things. This year, the doctors will be the guests of honor at a buffet Christmas Dinner on December 15th. Club Members and their husbands are invited to get acquainted with the Russians, who are always delighted to meet and visit with Memphians. Keith Mayo, a friend of Dorothy and Neil Crader, has invited the group to his home for this Christmas Dinner again this year. Some of the previous Russian doctors have kept in touch with Dorothy by email, and they recommend that the new visitors "be sure and contact the Craders" when they get to Memphis! GFWC Landmark is pleased that this International Affairs project is beneficial to everyone involved.
