Dear federation friends,

The Fall season is fully upon us. I hope that you are enjoying the changing seasons and taking advantage of all the opportunities GFWC membership has to offer. Have you attended a GFWC Region Conference? Participated in district meetings within your state? Made plans to attend your state convention this spring and the GFWC Convention in June? I hope so. These meetings provide valuable opportunities to make new friends, network, learn tips and techniques for enhancing your club work and expand your knowledge of all that this organization has to offer. I have been visiting each of our Regions this fall and am overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and excitement expressed by our members. You are the greatest!

As you all know, 9/11/01 changed our nation forever. In response, GFWC established a 9/11 Disaster Relief Fund. Contributions that were sent to the fund prior to 11/1/01 were forwarded to the American Red Cross to help in the immediate relief efforts. All monies given after that date have been designated for the New York state federation's Operation Firefighter Fund. Operation Firefighter is designed to replenish equipment lost by the NYC Fire Department on 9/11. Replenishing this equipment is vital for the safety and well being of all Americans who live near, work in or ever visit New York City.

Originally, we had hoped to raise enough money to purchase a new fully equipped fire truck. However, the cost of such a vehicle is between $300,000-600,000. To date, GFWC members have donated $140,000 to this fund. After talking with the New York City Fire Department regarding their needs, we have decided instead to try to purchase a fully furnished ambulance. The total cost of an equipped ambulance is $180,000. We need $40,000 to reach our goal.

GFWC will continue to accept donations to the 9/11 Disaster Relief Fund for Operation Firefighter. You may send contributions to GFWC Headquarters, Attn: Disaster Relief, 1734 N Street, NW, Washington, DC 20036.

Please help support this GFWC effort so that we may present this vital gift on behalf of all members of GFWC nationwide. (While there is no defined deadline for donations, we hope to reach our goal and present our gift by the end of the calendar year.) Please contact us if you have any questions. Thank you for your support of this effort and your continued commitment to the Federation.

Fondly, Judy Lutz, GFWC International President

GFWC of TN Scholarship -

Susan Martin, Chairman

Up to four scholarships of $1000 each will be awarded to college bound students in April at the spring convention.

Deserving students will not know about the first step to take unless your club lets the guidance counselor in your high school know of this opportunity.

  • Copy the scholarship application information found in your GFWC of TN handbook/directory on pages 120-122.
  • Take the pages to your high school(s).
  • Encourage students who need help to pursue a college education to apply.

Come to spring convention to see who is selected.
