The Knoxville News Sentinel joined with the GFWC Knoxville Woman's Club to build a wonderful four foot high and six foot wide computer desk, hutch and chair - built entirely out of canned food items. The CANstruction project was a community service project benefiting the Second Harvest Food Bank. The project cost $600.00 and contained over 600 cans, computer, computer books and other items. The club worked with a local architect on the design of the building. The desk was named "Community Service Desk" and was displayed at West town Mall in Knoxville in November. All can items were donated to the Second Harvest Food Bank at the end of the CANstruction Event. Second Harvest is a non-profit agency dedicated to the alleviation of hunger in East Tennessee. Last year they distributed 6.5 million pounds of food, feeding over 145,000 people.
GFWC Stones River Storytelling Seminar CIP Chairman Ruth Williams and the GFWC Stones River Woman's Club, along with the Friends of Donelson Library, have decided to make the community aware of the importance of storytelling in the education of our young people They have planned a series of storytelling seminars. Mary Granstaff, coordinator of the first event, states that/"Right now there is an increased interest in genealogy and oral history, and we need not to lose that skill." On Nov 23rd, GFWC Stones River W. C. and Friends of Donelson Library sponsored its first Storytelling Seminar at Two Rivers Mansion in Donelson TN. All area teachers and others were invited to attend the free seminar. The workshop was both instructional and entertaining. Locally renowned professional storytellers, Guerry and Doc McConnell were featured, with material covering folk tales, fairy tales, fables, family stories and original material covering historical events and characters .
