International Affairs - Kendra W. Patty Outreach for children Needing a project to do this spring? A easy and wonderful project for your club would be to make Operation Smile Bags. Upon completion of the facial surgery, each child receives a "smile bag" that is filled with small sizes of personal care items. These bags should be 12 inches wide by 14 inches deep. The bag should have a drawstring placed so that they are filled from the top. PLEASE MAIL THEM EMPTY, EVEN IF YOUR CLUB IS ALSO PROVIDING THE SUPPLIES FOR THEM. Operation Smile has a full time volunteer staff who fill the smile bags, which ensures that each child on the same mission receives the same items. For reporting purposes, GFWC has valued empty bags at $2.00. Bags and supplies are values at $10-$15 per bag. Smile Bag ideas: These are the only item that can be put in the smile bags. If you have any questions, please contact Kendra Patty at 865-938-7779 or kendrawpatty@juno.com. Wayne Williams was named Woman of the year by the Jackson Woman's Club for 2002. Wayne, a former President of the local club, is treasurer and education chairman. She has served as District 7 President. She is also active in the Jackson Symphony League and Northside Methodist Church. Wayne's contributions to the community have been generous and effective. She has our deep affection and admiration and is a much deserving recipient of this award. Ladies, we are off and running into the New Year. In January we had a local attorney, Mrs. Nancy Choate, speak to our club on the necessity of Financial Planning. Mrs. Isobel Todd lead club members in a memorial service for the members that died in 2002. Members in memory: Maxine Hawks, Marion Helms, Buna Lanham, and Ruby Claire Mulford. Our friends will be missed. In February six of our members attended the District IX meeting in Memphis, TN. The Arts & Crafts Contest from all clubs in the District were judged. We had three winners from Jackson. Jane Allen for crochet, Jane Roe for cross stitch, and Judith Wylie for photography. Congratulations.. Pat Mingledorff, one of our outstanding members, gave a program on the Relationship Grandparents have with their grandchildren and the life long effects. I recommend this program for all clubs. If interested contact Pat. Our February club meeting guest speaker was Rita Randolph, a local Nursery owner and operator. She spoke on the love of gardening with many helpful tips. On Valentine's Day we visited the Veterans Home in Humboldt, TN. Members provided refreshments, goody bags, lap robes, footies, and socks for residents. Entertainment was presented by a local gospel group. Fellowship and fun was enjoyed by all.. Our conservation chairman Vertie Henson collected donated birdseed from members and delivered to Cypress Grove nature park for our feathered friends. You know friends are like angels who brighten our days through their thoughtfulness and love.
