Woman’s Club

A friend of our club recently underwent a mastectomy at Erlanger Cancer Center in Chattanooga. She informed our Home Life Chairman, Fran High, that “love pillows” were desperately needed. These are heart shaped pillows that mastectomy patients can place under their arms to help reduce pain. Fran put us to work. Her goal was 50. We whipped out 103 in a short period of time. She then requested another 50.

Our ladies have been busy in other areas of volunteer work. Our Conservation Chairman, Marcia Connors, worked with our club to raise money to purchase flowers and shrubs for the Nancy Ward Cemetery in Polk County. Our members sent thank-you cards and gifts to our soldiers in the Middle East. We raised $204 at our Christmas Luncheon for the Toys for Tots in Rhea County.

I could go on and on, but need to start stuffing pillows.

GFWC JACKSON
WOMAN’S CLUB

Since our last issue Jackson experienced severe tornadoes on May 4th, with widespread damage, devastation and death. All the clubs across our great State came through with monetary donations for the victims. Your kindness and generosity is greatly appreciated. I personally want to say thank you and express my deep appreciation for being part of such a wonderful and caring organization.

June 12 & 13th members of the Jackson Woman's Club came together and prepared our Just Divine Chicken Salad sack lunches. The event began in LaVerne McIver's kitchen with 18 members bringing 4 pounds of chicken cooked, deboned and ready to go into chicken salad. On the 13th, members returned to LaVerne's to make sandwiches and deliver lunches. This began at 7AM and all was delivered by 12 PM. Ladies, we sold 600 lunches.

On June 21st, members met with TIPS, Tennessee Infant Parenting Services, for a picnic and to plant a tree in the North Jackson City Park. Our goal being to support the families and teach the children about conservation.

On July 11th, we held our annual theme luncheon and silent auction. I would like to commend all of our members for their hard work and participation. Everyone did her part. The friendship and camaraderie in our club and the support they have given me is humbling. This is one of our major fund raisers that enables us to serve our community. Also, I want to thank Jane Allen a Past President of our club for going to the Oaks Nursing Home and picking up Mrs. Maude Seward, who incidentally is 96 years young, in a wheel chair, and long time member. The look on her face and the tears on her cheek made this project even more special. She has not been able to attend in over a year. So Hearts for Jane... This is what the Jackson Woman's Club is all about.

We have also lost two long time very dear friends and members this summer. Jean Fowler and Sara Day. Where they used to be, there will be a hole in the world.

LaVerne McIver, President
