GFWC Jackson Woman’s Club
Celebrates 95th Anniversary

The GFWC Jackson Woman’s Club is celebrating its 95th anniversary. Our club was founded in 1908. We have served as an integral part of our community since the beginning. Our first business meeting for the upcoming year we celebrated with three of our past club presidents present and sharing their experiences and accomplishments. Mrs. Nell Googe, a longtime member, gave a very informative history of our club and how it has evolved. Each department chairman gave a short summary of her goals and then placed a piece of a large puzzle at the front of the room. The puzzle was whole after all the parts came together. The demonstration was a clear picture of how much more can be accomplished when we come together. This was also a great program for our new members to see what we are all about.

Wayne Williams shared an experience she had with a group from her church. They visited East Union Methodist Church, a black congregation. The preacher spoke of the suffering still going on in East Jackson from the tornado of May 4th.. This church was asking its members to give sacrificially for those less fortunate. Wayne’s group were the only Caucasians there. The church asked for shoes, coats, housekeeping supplies and school supplies. So many of the people were renters in low socio-economic situations and received no insurance. This was a very moving account given by Wayne.

Our club sponsored a drive to collect the requested materials. On September 16th, this was presented to the Afro-American Chamber of Commerce along with a monetary gift.

Members (pictured right) present for the presentation were from left, Vertie Henson, Sandra Johnson, Bobbie Brown, LaVerne McIver, Betsy Babb, Chamber’s secretary; and JoAnn Wagner.

Pictured at our September 9th celebration are Home Life Chairman Margaret Graves, LaVerne McIver, and Jane Gilley.
