Editor Honored by Memphis Woman Magazine

Congratulations are being extended to the Editor of The Tennessee Federation News, Anne Dean Babin, for being one of Memphis Woman Magazine’s "50 Women Who Make A Difference".

Anne’s picture and bio were featured in the June/July 2003 issue of Memphis Woman Magazine. At the recognition dinner, attended by 700 people on August 25th at the Park Vista Hotel in Memphis, she was introduced and presented with a desk plaque designating her selection as one of the "50 Women Who Make A Difference".

Anne has served as Editor of our TFNEWS since 2000, and is also the editor of three other newsletters. She is a third-generation member of GFWC of TN. Joining in 1968, she has held numerous offices in her clubs, District 9, and at the state level. She is active in the Collierville United Methodist Church, serving her 6th year as secretary to the Administrative Board. A long-time member of Commodore Perry Chapter DAR, she is secretary and publicity chairman, and served as regent for 4 years.

Anne and Alan will celebrate their 53rd wedding anniversary in November, and are proud of their five children and eleven grandchildren!

Legislation and Public Policy - Elaine Badelt, Chairman

Using the report form from the GFWC 2002-2004 program booklet Special Projects and Standing Committee Book as a cover, include a narrative (up to a page in length) describing the civic activities of your club as outlined on page 69 of the Tennessee State Handbook.
Specific activities that your club could report: Your club’s action on any Legislative Alert (for example: GFWC Bulletin 9, Protect Yourself from Identity Theft, Dec. 2002) that your chairman has directed your way and/or any legislative actions being pursued by GFWC; candidate forums organized by your club; letter writing sweeps; and phone calls to state and national legislators are particular activities your chairman examines for merit. Additional activities could include the education of your club members on issues affecting them, club programs on how bills become laws or how to communicate ideas and opinions to legislators.
GFWC members currently are working on a variety of legislative issues, namely Violence against women, protecting the elderly, closing the pay gap, convention to eliminate discrimination against women (CEDAW) and women’s health: breast cancer research.
It would be great to have more participation in this area. Please call Elaine Badelt if your club needs assistance.

Just a reminder to be saving some of your Halloween candy for the Unicorn Project Christmas boxes.

At our November meeting we will be packing boxes for the children of Morgan and Scott counties. If your classroom or your child’s class would like to help, please let me know. (note from Della Gowan, chairman)
Trick or Treat for UNICEF

The tradition of 'Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF' began in 1950 in the United States when Philadelphia school children first went door-to-door at Halloween collecting money in decorated milk cartons to help the world's children.
They raised a grand total of $17, kicking off a campaign that has since brought in more than $188 million to provide medicine, better nutrition, clean water, education, emergency relief and other support to children in more than 160 countries.

Millions of children now participate each year in Halloween-related fund-raising campaigns in the United States, Canada, Ireland, Mexico and Hong Kong.
But in these campaigns, children go far beyond trick or treating in scary costumes with the familiar orange collection boxes in hand. Children and young people take part in various fun and educational events that help them.
(THANKS to Angela Bryson for sharing the club’s newsletter! It’s full of good information! )
