Women’s History and Resource Center

"This past year has been a busy and exciting one for the WHRC. Thanks to generous donations from our Friends program, we were able to secure the services of a microfilming vendor to preserve portions of the archives badly in need of conservation. Specifically, this project targeted proceedings from conventions and biennial meetings from 1896 to 1935. We hope to continue this work in the future with other heavily used parts of the collection so that our researchers no longer will handle original documents.

Excerpted from the WHRC article by Leigh Wintz, Chairman, which appeared in the December 2003 issue of the Special Projects and Standing Committees newsletter..
HAS your club sent a copy of its History to the WHRC?
If yes, Congratulations!
IF no, Then WHY NOT? Just do it.

On Thanksgiving:

"What we're really talking about is a wonderful day set aside on the fourth Thursday of November when no one diets. I mean, why else would they call it Thanksgiving?" ?

GFWC Germantown Woman's Club members help address Christmas card for the Church Health Center. Each card is hand addressed and stamped by volunteers. The Church Health Center is a faith community health ministry located in Memphis. It provides affordable, high quality health care to uninsured workers, their families, the elderly and the homeless. It encourages its community to get and stay healthy - in body and spirit - at the Hope & Healing Center, wellness facility.

Mr. Kevin Carter, teacher at Houston High School, accepts a donation from GFWC Germantown Woman's Club (GWC) President Karen Grant to improve landscaping around the school. Pictured are John Aiken (left), principal, Elmire Phillips, GWC Conservation Chairman, Mrs. Grant, Mr. Carter and students involved in the project.
"Our club is thrilled at the interest these students have shown for our project at the Wolf River Nature Area. It will be interesting working together on Turtle Bayou and the Houston landscape project. Being able to share in their energy, ideas, and enthusiasm by donating the initial funds is very rewarding to our members," said Mrs. Phillips.
The team work will begin after the holidays. The students will assist the club members with an initial clean up. planting, and maintenance of the Turtle Bayou area. They will also be involved in developing the design plan as well. The goal is to reestablish the aquatic garden, featuring indigenous plants and wildlife, that was destroyed by the flooding of the Wolf River two years ago.
"This is a wonderful opportunity for our club members to experience the positive efforts and good things that are happening in our local schools," said Mrs. Grant.
