As Good Morning America launches its program to donate books to school libraries, members of the GFWC Janusette Delphian Club in Paris, Tennessee want you to know that we have been involved in "bookish" projects for a long time in our community. We are a small group of 25 active members, average age 70 years of age.

During the Reagan presidency, Mrs. Barbara Bush was GFWC's Honorary Literacy Chairman. Following her example since then we have been involved in the following projects: Annually, we hold membership in the Friends Of The Library that supplies our local public library with books selected by a committee.

Our Learning Disabilities Chairman, as regional vice president of the Tennessee Branch of the International Dyslexia Association, has begun a project to connect the groups by encouraging GFWC education chairmen to arrange programs conducted by qualified members of IDA to broaden awareness of reading problems in children and adults.

As our Christmas project 2003, the local club has arranged with the junior high school librarian to participate in their book sale on December 11. Books purchased will be wrapped and placed under the library Christmas tree for needy students. (The school has a list of 58 such students many of whom have few books in their homes)

We will continue to participate in GFWC's effort known as Libraries 2000 in response to the President's Summit for America's Future in 1997 to contribute our share in supporting public libraries and public school libraries. We want our students to emulate our first lady, Laura Bush, by getting caught reading!

GFWC Coytee Woman’s Club -- SER and GFWC Headquarters Tour

Three members of the GFWC Coytee Woman’s Club, JoAnn Kembel, Ann Stewart, and Mary Ann Williamson attended the GFWC Southeastern Region Meeting in Baltimore MD. Southeastern Region includes Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky and the District of Columbia. The meeting opened with SER President Bette L. Brust presiding. Welcome was by Babs Condon, GFWC Maryland President. Greetings were given by GFWC International President Judith Lutz. WE had interesting speakers and programs all weekend.
GFWC Maryland State night Banquet entertainment was by the Towson University Children’s Dance Division Troupe. The young ladies did a fantastic show. We had an Irish Style fun night with a cartoonist drawing a picture of each person who attended.
Saturday’s "Learn From Yesterday" Banquet entertainment was The Chinese Historical Costume Show, by the GFWC Chinese Woman’s League of Metropolitan Washington, DC. This is a fabulous combination of history, colorful fashions and choreography. Maryland did a great job of keeping us entertained. A tour of the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, including Bancroft Hall, the Academy Chapel and luncheon in the Officers and Faculty Club. We also visited the Maryland State House and the Governor’s Mansion.
A highlight of the trip was a tour of the GFWC Headquarters in Washington DC. Rear Admiral William Radford built the five-story brick and stone mansion at 1734 N Street in 1875. GFFWC bought the house from Mr. and Mrs. John Jay White in 1922. This was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1991. The building has beautiful antiques, art and furnishings donated by members. Morgan Davis, tour director, guided us on our tour. She did a super job of explaining to us all the details about Headquarters. After the tour we ate at the Iron Gate Inn, a popular Washington restaurant.
