GFWC of Tennessee
Volume 2, Issue 8            "Hearts in Unity - Beating for Others"                  January 2004

The Janusette Delphian Club, Paris, Tennessee, District 8, in September, had as their guest the winner of the Leadership Scholarship, Haley Treider, who impressed the members with a synopsis of her experience in attending the week-end seminar in May 2003. In October, the club had as their guest the director of the Paris-Henry County Heritage Center, Anne Hertzog, who presented an entertaining and informative program with a brief history of the community and a film on the recent historic cemetery tour. Many of the club members have pledged annual memberships in the center. The club presented Miss Hertzog with a donation also. Joyce Essenberg presented the program in November on Operation Smile which the club has supported for many years. The non-profit medical organization provides reconstructive surgery to children and adults in foreign countries as well as to the uninsured children in America.

At its monthly meetings, the club passes its "Smile" basket requiring each member to participate by placing a contribution in the basket as she relates to the club a recent experience that made her smile. Monies collected are sent in to the Operation Smile headquarters.

The Education Committee of the Janusette Delphian Club, District 8, had a bookish Christmas project for the students in need at Grove Junior High School, Paris, Tennessee. Each club member purchased books, selected by the school librarian, wrapped them in bright bows and placed them under the Christmas tree in the school library to be presented to the students as they left for the holiday vacation. (The school has over 58 underprivileged students) The Education Committee of the club consists of Joy Kriesky, Mary Sue Leach, Gay Nichols, and Joyce Weiher. Club president is Jane Wilson.

eGFWC Greetings for the Season

Dear GFWC Members,
It was a great pleasure visiting with you at the eight GFWC Region Conferences this fall. Once again, I was impressed with the extraordinary commitment and compassion you exhibit as you work to make a positive difference in the lives of others. At this time of Thanksgiving, I extend my heartfelt thanks to each of you for sharing your time and talents with GFWC.
Your positive reaction last year to my decision to break with tradition and express the spirit of the holiday season in a different manner really warmed my heart. So again, this year, GFWC will refrain from mailing holiday cards to members and friends and, instead, will make a contribution in your honor to the Patricia Roberts Harris Educational Center in Washington, D.C.
I can think of no more fitting and proper action than joining with all our GFWC clubs who are making such outstanding contributions to the GFWC Libraries 2000 & Beyond Project. By giving funds to P.R. Harris, Headquarters not only continues to build the school library's collection of books and materials, but also it honors the commitment the Federation has made to contribute $2 million to public elementary school libraries during 2002-2004.
GFWC Headquarters will be hosting our annual Holiday Reception on Wednesday, December 3rd from 5:30-7:30 pm. If you plan to be in the Washington, DC area, please join us for this festive gathering.
Please know that you are in my thoughts and have my heartfelt good wishes for a joyous holiday season.
Sincerely,
Judy Lutz, GFWC International President
