GFWC KNOXVILLE Woman’s Club

The GFWC Knoxville Womans Club participated with the Second Harvest Food Bank in their “Canstruction Project”. Canstruction is a spectacular community service project benefiting millions of hungry people. The GFWC Knoxville WC along with a grant from the Knoxville News Sentinel, built a colossal eight foot high and three foot around lighthouse entirely of can food items. The structure cost $700 and contained over 400 cans. The GFWC Knoxville WC worked with a local Architect on the design of the building. The lighthouse was named “Liberty Light’ and was displayed at West Town Mall in Knoxville in November. All the can items were donated to the Second Harvest Food Bank at the end of the Canstruction event. Second Harvest is a non-profit agency dedicated to the alleviation of hunger in East Tennessee. Last year they distributed 6.5 million pounds of food, feeding over 14,500 people.

GFWC Tiptonville Woman’s Club

GFWC Tiptonville Woman’s Club of District 8 held open house and dedication in June celebrating the completion of the children’s room addition and renovation of the Tiptonville Public Library. Tiptonville Library first began in the home of a woman’s club member in 1924. A new library was constructed in 1940. The club’s present effort has added 1200 sq. ft. which include a children’s room and after-hours meeting area for the community. At this time we renovated the original building. The projects costs exceeded $200,000. We received in-kind service for construction from Northwest Correctional Center’s carpentry crews and furniture and shelving refinished or built by Northwest’s Carpentry shop to the equivalent of $66,000. We successfully applied for a USDA grant totaling $40,000. Club members achieved the balance of funding with the organization of a Friends of the Library group. Fund-raising efforts were yard sales, contact with donors, historic print sales, special promotions with American Girl Dolls, aluminum can recycling, and memorial gifts. It is the goal of the club to continue to provide a public library for community and county use.
