LANA’S LETTER
LANA ROBINSON—GFWC of TN President Elect

“Lana’s Letter”

Happy New Year to each of you, my fellow club women and friends. I trust your Holiday season was merry and bright and blessed as mine was. I know the blessings seemed mighty easy to count this year, given all that has happened to our Nation.

The last weekend in November I attend the GFWC Orientation meeting in Washington, (actually we stayed across the river in Alexandria, Virginia). It was very exciting to hear GFWC President-elect, Judith Lutz tell of her plans for the 2002-2004 administration. We will be seeing some very positive changes and some exciting new programs. I was especially pleased to find that many of my plans coincide with her programs. You will be hearing more about both sets at the appropriate time. I will tell you, however, that the best news is a major change in REPORTING: a change which will make it so easy, it will be almost impossible for a club not to report.

I was especially delighted to travel to and from Washington with your Director-elect of Junior Clubs, Carla Goff. The trip afforded us the opportunity to share our plans for the next administration and to become better acquainted with each other. It is going to be such a pleasure for me to work with Carla for the two years I am serving you.

Speaking of plans, I am extremely busy filling board positions, securing locations for meetings and doing all the other things that must be done before taking office. I must say a special “thank you” to your President, Susan, for her help and cooperation in doing so. I also hope each of you will make plans now to attend the spring convention in Nashville in April. Margaret and Susan have done a great job planning for that and I look forward to a wonderful installation. GFWC 2nd. Vice President, Jacquelyn Pierce will be here to install the officers, and I know you will love meeting her.

My thanks to all of you who have agreed to serve as board members for 2002-2004 and those who will agree in the very near future.

In Federation Love, Lana

DELLA DISCUSSES— Della Gowan,
GFWC of TN Director of Junior Clubs

It’s hard to believe reports have been written and convention is just around the corner. From the bottom of my heart —THANK YOU for all each GFWC of Tennessee clubwoman does to improve the quality of life for a child. We are true Advocates for Children. I would like to share the following poem given to me in a book from a special friend, Patty Cato. As you read this poem, I hope you are challenged to continue to be genuine Advocates for Children. May your hearts be filled with love for children everywhere!

A PRAYER FOR REPONSIBILITY FOR CHILDREN

  • We pray for children:
  • Who put chocolate fingers everywhere,
  • Who like to be tickled,
  • Who stomp in puddles and ruin their new pants,
  • Who erase holes in their math workbooks,
  • Who can never find their shoes.
  • And we pray for those:
  • Who stare at photographers behind barbed wire,
  • Who can’t bound down the streets in a new pair of sneakers,
  • Who never “counted potatoes”,
  • Who were born in places we wouldn’t be caught dead,
  • Who never go to the circus,
  • Who live in an X-rated world.
  • We pray for children:
  • Who bring us sticky kisses and fistfuls of dandelions,
  • Who sleep with the dogs and bury the goldfish,
  • Who hug us in a hurry and forget their lunch money,
  • Who cover themselves with band-aids and sing off key,
  • Who squeeze toothpaste all over the sink,
  • Who slurp their soup.
  • And we pray for those:
  • Who never get dessert,
  • Who never have a safe blanket to drag behind them,
  • Who watch their parents watch them die,
  • Who can’t find any bread to steal,
  • Who don’t have any rooms to clean up,
  • Whose pictures aren’t on anybody’s dresser,
  • Whose monsters are real.
  • We pray for children:
  • Who spend all of their allowance before Tuesday,
  • Who throw tantrums in the grocery store and pick at their food,
  • Who like ghost stories,
  • Who shove dirty clothes under the bed, and never rinse out the tub,
  • Who get visits from the tooth fairy,
  • Who don’t like to be kissed in front of the car pool,
  • Who squirm in church or temple or scream in the phone,
  • Whose tears we sometimes laugh at,
  • Whose smiles can make us cry.
  • And we pray for children:
  • Whose nightmares come in the daytime,
  • Who will eat anything,
  • Who have never been to a dentist,
  • Who aren’t spoiled by anyone,
  • Who go to bed hungry and cry themselves to sleep,
  • Who live and move but have no being.
  • We pray for children:
  • Who want to be carried and
  • For those who must,
  • For those who never give up and
  • For those who don’t get a second chance,
  • For those we smother and for those
  • Who will grab the hand of anyone kind enough to offer.
