SOUTHEASTERN REGIONAL MEETING
NOVEMBER 08-11, 2001

The GFWC Southeastern Region Conference, consisting of the District of Columbia, Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia was held November 8 – 11, 2001. The GFWC Virginia Federation hosted the Conference at The Homestead in Hot Springs, Virginia. Six states were represented with an attendance totaling 253 members and guests.

The GFWC of TN Delegation in attendance at the conference included Susan Martin, GFWC of TN President, Sue Walker, GFWC Southeastern Region Treasurer, Margaret England, past Southeastern Region President, Pat Thurston, past GFWC of TN. President, Lana Robinson, GFWC of TN President-elect, Ann McDonald and Jo Ann Kembel.

As an extension of the GFWC Unity in Diversity, the theme for the Conference was “The Golden Thread of Service”. The weekend presented a great opportunity to share ideas, renew old friendships, to begin new ones and to be inspired by the special guests, Shelby P. Hamlett, GFWC International President and Judith Lutz, GFWC President-elect, and Sgt. Major “Al” Hockaday of the Virginia Military Institute.

The Virginia National Guard served as Color Guard for the conference. Special music for the conference was presented by the following: The Faithful Men, Sarah Loan, The Allegheny Highlands High School Concert Choir and Linda Beatty, GFWC VFWC Second Vice-President.

Tennessee’s own Pat Thurston shared her expertise with Region Members with a member recruitment workshop entitled “What Can You Tell Me?”

On Saturday morning at the opening business meeting the SER OFFICERS FOR 2002-2004 were elected. Those elected are:

SER PRESIDENT: Bettye Brust, Maryland

SER VICE-PRESIDENT: Mary Louise Sypolt, West Virginia

SER SECRETARY: Jean Burcher, Virginia SER TREASURER: Phoebe McCoy, Kentucky

Congratulations to each of the new SER Officers serving for the next administration!

One of the highlights of the conference was the STATE BOWLING TOURNAMENTS, held Saturday night. The most significant and important thing for all Tennessee club members to remember is that TENNESSEE TOOK THE SECOND PLACE TROPHY!!!!!!HOORAY TEAM!!!!!!

The invitation to SER 2002 Region Meeting was given by Susan Martin, GFWC of TN President. This meeting will be hosted by the TENNESSEE FEDERATION and held at THE AIRPORT MARRIOTT in Nashville, TN November 08-10, 2002.
